One of the easiest ways to spot the differences between Chinese consumers and those in other parts of the world is to look at the APPs on their cell phones. Most of us would be shocked to see how little crossover there is between the two. Chinese consumers use APPs designed in China for Chinese consumer needs for virtually everything. This includes online purchasing, sending messages, booking movie tickets, planning a trip and ordering meals (as a start). When trying to understand the Chinese consumer it is important to understand how these APPs work and why they are successful. This is one easy way to have a window into the Chinese consumers' decision making process. We can leverage clues from these APPs to develop an understanding of the information Chinese consumers are looking for, their path to purchase and messaging / communications that fit the market.
